Argentina train crash in Buenos Aires 'kills dozens'

Some 49 were killed and at least 600 injured, officials said, in the worst train accident in Argentina for 40 years.
The train struck the end of the platform at the station once in the capital Buenos Aires during the morning rush hour.


"We believe that there is a fault in the brakes," said Transport Minister JP Schiavi.
Dozens of people were trapped for hours in the rubble, but all were brought to safety and success.
"The train was full and had a huge impact" as a passenger identified Ezequiel told local television.
Doctors at the scene of the victims were overpowered, he added.
"People started to break windows and get out, but they could," another eyewitness told Reuters.
"Then I saw the engine and damaged the driver trapped between the steel. There were many casualties, many children, the elderly," said the eyewitness.
Police outside the station once had to "keep the curious and concerned that paramedics treated the injured," said Tom witness told the BBC English.
The train was on the wall at about 12 mph (20 km / h) struck, destroying the front of the engine and the cars behind her crisp, Schiavi said.
One of the cars was driven nearly 6m (20ft) in the next, he added.Critical Condition
The survivors told local media that many people were injured in a tangle of metal and glass.
Emergency Medical System director Alberto Crescenti said some passengers who survived had to be amputated. Many have stopped out of breath and suffered trauma to the thoracic spine.
Many are in critical condition in hospital in the city and there are fears that could increase the number of fatalities, Vladimir Hernandez in BBC reports from Buenos Aires.
Five accidents occurred in and around the city in recent months, our correspondent says.
Many parts of the rail network in Argentina, is ailing and in need of renovation and this incident to raise concern about the lack of investment in the system, he adds.
"It is the responsibility of a company that is known for poor maintenance and improvisation ..." Edgardo Reinoso of the railway union, the news agency Reuters.
"The lack of controls" on the part of government agencies was also to blame, said Reinoso.
Trenes of Buenos Aires, the company that owns the train, expressed his "deep regret" over the accident.
"The company sends its condolences to the families of those passengers who have died and remains concerned about the health of those who were injured," he said in a statement.
In September 2011, 11 people when a train hit a bus in Buenos Aires died crossing the tracks, then hit a second oncoming train station.
This accident is the worst accident in Argentina in the process since February 1970 when a train crashed into another at full speed in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, killing 200 people.
